STEPHEN HILGER

Professional Experience

Steve Hilger is engaged in complex commercial business transactions and litigation with an emphasis on construction law. He has tried many cases in multiple state and federal courts, and has appeared in several state courts of appeal, the Michigan Supreme Court, United States District Courts, United States District Courts of Appeal, the United States Supreme Court on cert, and multiple arbitration tribunals across the country.

Steve is active in mediating and arbitrating complex commercial and construction law and related cases. His cases range from simple construction issues to complex commercial, municipal and industrial projects involving claims and issues in the tens of millions of dollars.

Steve is also involved in extensive contract preparation and review. He is routinely involved in extensive negotiation of transactions and agreements, as well as pre- and post-litigation mediation. The remainder of Steve’s practice involves in-depth participation in and the making of recommendations for business decisions and business strategies, as well as assisting in regulatory compliance and promoting and developing best practices.

Professional Experience

Aileen Leipprandt learned the value of hard work, honest business dealings and creative problem solving by working in her family’s hardware business from an early age. With that backdrop, Aileen brings more than 25 years of legal counseling and litigation experience to the table in construction law and commercial litigation.

A critical thinker and problem solver, Aileen’s passion is in developing, sharpening, and implementing strategies that efficiently meet clients’ legal, financial and relational goals.

If litigation becomes necessary, Aileen brings her intensity and focus to the courtroom as well. Aileen is an exercise and outdoor enthusiast, often embracing the challenges of an uphill run, a downhill ski slope, and a tiny green guarded by menacing bunkers.

Mark Rysberg practices in the areas of construction law and commercial litigation. He represents construction industry clients involved in complex matters. He has tried cases in numerous state courts, state appellate courts, federal trial courts, federal bankruptcy courts and federal appellate courts.

Professional Experience

Suzanne Sutherland practices in the areas of construction law and commercial litigation, including the representation of contractors, construction managers and major trade contractors. She also counsels clients on business planning and real estate transactions. Suzanne is experienced in contract review, negotiation and preparation.

Suzanne lectures and writes on construction law topics including MIOSHA compliance, the Michigan Construction Lien Act, the Builders Trust Fund Act, environmental issues and Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Suzanne is highly involved in the West Michigan community, volunteering with Grand Rapids Public Schools and the Grand Rapids Bar Association. She frequently serves as a guest lecturer at Wayne State University Law School.

DANIEL J. HATCH

Professional Experience

Dan Hatch practices in the areas of construction law, business law, tax law, insurance recovery and advisory, and commercial litigation. He is experienced in civil and commercial litigation representing owners, contractors, and suppliers in various matters involving contract disputes, tort and professional liability claims, lien and bond claims, and collections in state and federal courts. Dan also specializes in captive insurance and alternative risk management providing tax and financial strategies to small and mid-sized businesses utilizing captive insurance arrangements. Prior to joining Hilger Hammond, Dan worked at Ernst and Young where he specialized in corporate and international taxation advising clients in the automotive, packaging, printing, food manufacturing, pharmaceutical, technology, aerospace, and defense industries.

Dan is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Law, summa cum laude, where he served as an Associate Editor of the Michigan State Law Review and a teaching assistant at the Michigan State University College of Law Housing Clinic.

Dan lectures and writes on construction law and business topics including sales and use tax, compliance, captive insurance, risk management, and the Federal Miller Act.

Outside of the office, Dan enjoys golf, sailing, photography, travel, and Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. Dan is a native of Southeast Michigan where he grew up on his family’s 80-acre Centennial Farm.
